Ear wax removal

Frequently Asked Questions

Microsuction is the preferred technique to safely remove ear wax from within the ear canal. Using high resolutions and magnifying loopes plus a medical grade suction device. The ear wax is carefully removed from the ear canal.

Microsuction is safer, cleaner and takes less time than ear syringing. Unlike ear syringing, microsuction doesn't involve injecting water into the ear. This helps to reduce he risk of trauma within the ear and safely removes the ear wax.

Having ear wax in your ears is normal. It's a product that the body creates to help clean, protect and lubricate our ears. It also helps to fight off infection and keep dust, dirt and other debris from entering the deeper structures of the ear. However, sometimes we can create too much ear wax and it can start to affect people hearing. It is at this point that it is recommended the ear wax is removed. Our blog on ear wax will give you some more information. See here!

Why Microsuction and not ear syringing?

Why do I have wax in my ears?

What is Microsuction?

Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?

Unlike ear syringing, there is no requirement to use ear drops prior to your appointment. However, we do still recommend 3-5 days of oiling prior to your appointment. This will make it easier for us to remove the ear wax and make it a more comfortable experience for you.

How long does the procedure take?

We allow 30 mins for each appointment. This gives us enough time to consult and perform Microsuction.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

Yes, if there are appointments still available on the day we simply ask that you call or WhatsApp us to book.

We only advise booking an on-the-day appointment if you have already been oiling your ears. Otherwise we might not be able to remove dry / hard ear wax.

Can anyone have Microsuction treatment?

Unfortunately, we're unable to perform microsuction on anyone under the age of 14 years old. After making a booking we will send you a consent & medical declaration form to complete. Certain answers may result in you being unable to have the procedure done. We will contact you to discuss.

Who can book home visits?

Home visits can be booked by anyone but we understand they're particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues or those who're frail. We provide our service within the Bristol & surrounding areas. Please contact us via our dedicated page to discuss you're requirements. Click Here - Home Visits.

Why have I been told not to use sodium bicarbonate or OTEX Express?

Unlike olive oil, these products work to breakdown the ear wax. Sometimes this leads to a fluid like substances within your ear canal. This then spreads across your ear canal and ear drum, making it extremely difficult to remove and generally will result in us not being able to clean your ears like we would normally. Read our blog on Olive Oil.

Why are your prices more than some other places?

Unlike some companies, we specialise solely in ear healthcare. We also pride ourselves on our medical experience to be able to examine and identify any ear related conditions and the need for follow up care. Our practitioners can use video & photo imaginary, alongside letters to refer you to your GP or appropriate specialist. For this reason, we hope that the service we provide is seen as a fair value for money.

Why is my hearing still not right?

Sometimes your earwax isn't the only reason for you ear symptoms or hearing changes. For some, by removing the earwax, it helps to rule it out as the primary cause. We can then assess your ears further for any abnormalities. In other cases you might need to leave your ears to settle after having the earwax removed for you to see an improvement. Unfortunately, it maybe that there is another cause for your hearing changes and we will help by providing you with advice on what to do next.

Should I be protecting my hearing?

We recommend to all our clients that they should protect their hearing at all costs. Conditions like hearing loss and tinnitus can be live changing and really affect you in everyday life. Hearing protection is important to everyone but those in loud environments should pay particular attention. Check out our custom fit earplugs page to find out more on how to protect your hearing.
