Why Choose
Custom fit earplugs for swimming represent a sophisticated hearing protection solution designed specifically for individuals who spend significant time in water. Unlike standard off-the-shelf earplugs, these custom earplugs are precisely moulded to an individual's unique ear canal shape, providing superior protection, comfort, and water-tight sealing.
The primary purpose of custom swimming earplugs is to prevent water from entering the ear canal, which can lead to a range of potential health issues. When water enters the ear, it creates an environment that can cause several complications, including swimmer's ear (otitis externa), ear infections, and potential hearing damage.
Professional and recreational swimmers find these earplugs particularly valuable. Competitive swimmers who spend hours training in chlorinated pools benefit significantly from the protection against chemical irritants and potential ear infections. Individuals with a history of ear problems, such as chronic ear infections or perforated eardrums, find custom earplugs especially crucial.
Children and individuals with frequent ear infections are prime candidates for custom swimming earplugs. People with existing ear tube implants or those recovering from ear surgeries can protect their delicate ear structures more effectively with these precisely fitted devices. Surfers, water sports enthusiasts, and individuals with ear sensitivity also find immense value in custom-fit solutions.
Custom fit swimming earplugs provide a watertight seal, safeguarding your delicate ear canals from infection and long-term hearing damage caused by prolonged water exposure.
The protection provided by custom swimming earplugs goes beyond simple water blockage. They create a hermetic seal that prevents water from entering the ear canal, which is crucial in preventing several potential hearing-related issues. The precise fit eliminates gaps that could allow water penetration, unlike generic earplugs that often leave microscopic openings.
Materials used in custom swimming earplugs are typically medical-grade silicone or specialized polymers that are both water-resistant and hypoallergenic. These materials provide flexibility to conform to ear movement while maintaining a consistent seal. Some advanced models incorporate additional features like drainage channels that allow trapped water to escape while maintaining overall protection.
Beyond the physical barrier, custom swimming earplugs also help protect against temperature-related ear issues. Cold water can cause rapid temperature changes in the ear canal, potentially leading to discomfort and increased susceptibility to infections. The custom fit provides an additional layer of thermal protection, helping to maintain ear canal temperature and reduce associated risks.
For individuals with specific ear conditions like recurring ear infections, perforated eardrums, or those who have undergone ear surgeries, these custom earplugs represent more than just a comfort item—they are a critical health protection tool. They allow individuals to enjoy water activities without the constant worry of potential ear-related complications
These specialised earplugs are crafted through a meticulous process that begins with a professional audiologist taking precise impressions of an individual's ear canals. Using advanced moulding techniques, the earplugs are created to match the exact contours of each ear, ensuring a perfect, water-resistant seal that generic earplugs cannot achieve.

Earwax removal is a process of cleaning our ears of excessive earwax that has built up in our ear canals. There are a number of different methods used to try and do this including the preferred method of microsuction, ear syringing / irrigation or manual removal. Some people can also remove their earwax blockage by using over-the-counter ear drops.
See our earwax removal page for more information.
Microsuction is a professional earwax removal technique where a professional uses a specialised microscope and a medical suction device to carefully vacuum out earwax. Unlikely ear syringing where water is injected into the ear canal creating unnecessary risk of injury and hearing damage. Microsuction is safe, effective and painfree. It is the only treatment technique we use at Bristol Ear Health and is the national recommended method of earwax extraction.
Read more on our earwax removal page.
Prior to your appointment we will review your symptoms and consent form to make sure microsuction is suitable for you. When you arrive, you will be welcomed by our staff. We will start with an assessment of your ears. Depending on what we find, we will either proceed with treatment or review any findings. Treatment takes approximately 15-20 mins for most people. Following treatment we will review your ears again and assess your ear drums for any issues. If we find something we don't like the look of we will provide you a referral letter and digital imagery to share with your NHS GP.
